About Maison les Pommiers

Maison Les Pommiers is a 'maison bourgeoise' dating from the 17th century. It is built in the local stone with a spiral staircase in the tower typical of the period in the Haute Marne, at the top is the pigeonniere. The house was divided at some time so while we own the upper part of the tower, our neighbour has the bottom! There are many original features such as the flagstones on the kitchen floor, the huge Burgundian fireplaces and massive beams. Outside there is the old bread oven and in the front courtyard the old piggery.

We bought the house in 2009 in a coupe de foudre! We were sent an email saying the house was for sale and somehow even though we weren't looking to buy , two weeks later we were staying there and fell for the charm of the house and its lovely walled garden.

For us, and as many people who have stayed tell us, Les Pommiers is a special place, the house with so much character and the garden an oasis of peace. It has been a wonderful adventure for us to gradually develop and improve things, but always trying to preserve the character. We have worked hard in the garden planting a wild garden to attract bees and butterflies and putting fruit trees espaliered along the walls. We plan a bog garden which will hopefully encourage aquatic life such as the midwife toads which can be heard calling locally.

We have been lucky to have the help and support of people in the village as without them it would be impossible to let the house but we couldn't bear to have the place empty! Our aim is to benefit the local economy, we love to share the place with other people and that makes things economically more viable and allows us to put the money back into maintenance and new projects.
